We also work with policymakers, industry leaders, legislators, and a grassroots community of concerned parents and teachers to improve the media and education landscape for kids, families, and schools.

The Silicon Valley development manager is a frontline ambassador for Common Sense in Silicon Valley, who cultivates relationships with private and independent schools, major donors, and community partners. S/he is responsible for our Independent School Program in the region, including facilitating parent education presentations. S/he also supports the senior director, Bay Area in recruiting individuals for and engaging with the Silicon Valley Advisory Council, with the goal of building our presence in the region and building philanthropic support.

Advisory Council + Fundraising

  • Support the senior director, Bay Area in building and maximizing the efforts of the Silicon Valley Advisory Council to expand Common Sense's organizational presence, funding base, and regional visibility by:
    • Identifying, cultivating, and recruiting new council members, with a focus on individuals with young children.
    • Helping to coordinate and plan agendas for three Advisory Council meetings per year.
    • Ensuring that all Advisory Council members are actively engaged with meaningful assignments that strengthen their commitment to Common Sense's mission.  
  • Work with the senior director, Bay Area to execute a Silicon Valley fundraising program that raises annual philanthropic support from a combination of major gifts, local family foundations, and high-impact events, including:
    • Designing, planning, and executing major donor cultivation, fundraising, and stewardship events.
    • Building and managing long-term relationships with donors and prospects, identifying, cultivating, and stewarding their interests.

Independent School Program

  • Recruit and cultivate member schools, building strong relationships with the heads of schools as well as the program directors.
  • Facilitate parent talks and teen panels.
  • Direct development associate in supporting day-to-day operations of program.

Presence Building

  • Identify opportunities for new partnerships with community leaders and companies aligned with organizational priorities by leveraging Advisory Council connections/networks.
  • Attend key regional events to network and raise awareness about the organization.


  • Bachelor's degree required
  • 35 years of successful experience in fundraising (particularly in a field related to education, 
families, and children) through board, major volunteer, or operating role
  • Outstanding oral and written communication skills; public speaking experience required
  • Passionate about kids and Common Sense mission
  • Creative and high level of energy and productivity
  • Execution-focused and able to convert strategy into action and results
  • Self-motivated and flexible; must work well independently
  • Ability to prioritize, organize, follow through, and multitask in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial
