We also work with policymakers, industry leaders, and legislators to improve the media, tech, and education landscape for kids, families, and schools.

Common Sense has an exciting new opportunity for a director of conferences and events. Reporting to the vice president of communications, this person will conceive of, plan, organize, and execute events of all sizes, on behalf of all areas of the organization including executive, consumer, education, advocacy, research, and development, in the United States and around the world. This person will leverage events to do three things: 1). advance our organizational goals in thought leadership and advocacy; 2). deepen our relationship with our member and donor communities; and 3). generate revenue.

LOCATION: San Francisco, Calif.


  • Conceive of, plan, organize, and execute multiple Common Sense-hosted events per year that extend our thought leadership position and advance our strategic objectives, from conception through execution.
  • Work with the development and marketing teams to conceive, plan, organize, and execute compelling and successful regional fundraising and "friend-raising" events, including the annual Common Sense Awards.
  • Work with the marketing and membership teams to conceive and operationalize events as a member/community benefit.
  • Work with the communications team on an active speakers' bureau program that places Common Sense executives at key conferences around the globe and extends the organization's thought leadership.
  • Manage the creation of event materials including collateral and videos that are on-message and on-brand and that advance strategic objectives.
  • Manage annual event budget; test and develop a plan for event opportunities that generate revenue.
  • Work with and/or supervise event partners, event planners, and vendor relationships, from contract execution to payment.


  • 10+ years of event and/or communications experience, with proven experience and success executing high-profile events.
  • Minimum five years of demonstrated experience as a team manager and project manager.
  • Proven budget-management abilities.
  • Demonstrated experience managing contracts, vendors, suppliers, and event planners.
  • Excellent organizational and strong writing skills.
  • Outstanding ability to prioritize and multitask; willingness to take risks and be flexible in high-pressure environments.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
