We offer the largest library of independent age-based and educational ratings and reviews for everything your kids want to watch, play, read, and learn. Our movie and TV ratings are available on Netflix, Comcast, DirecTV, and many other partner networks, helping families and kids make smart media choices. Through our schools program, we provide educators with a curriculum that teaches the essential digital citizenship and literacy skills every student needs to succeed. More than 100,000 member schools across the country use our ratings and free curricula and content. We also work with policymakers, industry leaders, legislators, and a grassroots community of concerned parents and teachers to improve the media and education landscape for kids, families, and schools.

 

Common Sense is seeking an all-star intern who can help our consumer editorial team over the summer. This is a great opportunity for anyone looking to get practical experience in the online publishing world at a rapidly growing, national nonprofit. The ideal candidate will be a great team player who's detail-oriented and can work both collaboratively and independently.

 

LOCATION: San Francisco, CA

 

WHAT YOU'LL DO:

  • Join an established, productive editorial team as part of our larger consumer department
  • Get hands-on experience with SEO best practices, researching trends in media and technology, writing for a wide audience, and using Drupal websites/content management systems
  • Pitch ideas for blog posts and/or recommended media lists
  • Write overviews of upcoming new movie releases
  • Expand our brand by posting  reviews to critic websites such as Rotten Tomatoes and IMDb
  • Attend advance screenings of new movie releases as needed
  • Specific projects may include:
    • Preparing screenshots and images for movie and TV reviews
    • Updating classic book, TV, and/or movie reviews as needed
    • Updating curated lists with current and relevant apps, games, books, movies, and TV shows
    • Researching trends and popular channels in YouTube to grow our YouTube review library
    • Organizing and optimizing content for syndication partners
    • Communicating with book publishers and sending books to reviewers
    • Providing research support for special projects

 

WHAT WE NEED TO SEE ON YOUR RÉSUMÉ:

  • Writing, journalism, communications, or media studies majors preferred, or demonstrated interest in these subjects
  • Detail-oriented with strong follow-through
  • Strong teamwork skills; cooperative working style
  • Flexible and responsive; able to perform in a dynamic work environment

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

  • Ideal start date: Orientation is Monday, June 17, from 10 a.m.–3 p.m. On-site attendance is preferred.
  • Ideal end date: Friday, August 9, 2019
  • Hours: ~15-20 hours/week
  • Interns need to be available to attend a minimum of six weekly educational Lunch & Learns (there will be seven total). Lunch & Learns will be every Wednesday from 12 p.m.–1:00 p.m. (PST). On-site attendance is preferred.
  • We will work with your clinical or internship office for school credit.
  • This is a paid opportunity.
