We are seeking a sr. director, Common Sense Kids Action, to help manage the advocacy and policy operations for the organization and to work closely with the CEO/founder to implement the national, state, and local advocacy and policies initiatives. The director, Common Sense Kids Action, will report to the CEO/founder of Common Sense and will work closely with the senior leadership team and all departments responsible for developing, managing, and executing the organization's policy and advocacy programs.

The sr. director, Common Sense Kids Action, oversees all activities pertaining to advocacy, including overall strategy, planning, policy work, program management, personnel management, and budget. S/he will help develop an overall advocacy strategy for the organization and will implement new processes and approaches to achieve the targeted impact. S/he will review services being offered and develop new programs as needs emerge. The director will work closely with the chief executive officer on all program strategies.

Strategic Planning

  • Work in partnership with the founder/CEO and other Common Sense staff to create and achieve a next-stage strategic plan for the Kids Action platform.
  • Coordinate with other Common Sense departments and functions to plan and manage work and project deliverables.
  • Identify geographic growth opportunities and priorities for Kids Action.

Department & Performance Management

  • Serve as the internal leader of the Kids Action team.
  • Lead the performance-management process that measures and evaluates progress against goals for the advocacy platform.
  • Organize team structure, recruit staff, and manage team performance.
  • Communicate the Kids Action message internally and to external audiences.

Fundraising & Budgeting

  • Manage the team's fundraising and development work in coordination with the CEO and development team.
  • Oversee annual operations planning and budgeting.
  • Manage budget in partnership with the finance team.


  • A bachelor's degree and 10+ distinguished years in a senior management position, ideally in a nonprofit organization, foundation, agency, or political office.
  • Ability to achieve results at a high level under pressure.
  • Understands how communications, policy, and advocacy work together on the local, state, and national levels.
  • Success in roles requiring execution of multiple tasks while responding to multiple priorities.
  • Proven ability to work with efficiency, flexibility, and good humor.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain relationships with a wide array of people.
  • Possess outstanding communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Passionate about CSKA's mission and impact.
  • Ability to exercise tact and diplomacy.
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to prioritize workload in a timely manner to complete assignments when faced with many deadlines and competing requirements.
  • Ability and willingness to travel.
