General Manager, Common Sense Education

This role provides strategic and operational leadership in all mission-critical functions of the Education organization and is accountable for the financial performance of the group. As a successful candidate, you will be responsible for shaping the future of the initiative, evolving our products, expanding our reach and impact and generating significant earned income that will sustain Common Sense Education.

The qualified candidate will be a highly analytical, results-driven executive with a proven track record in entrepreneurial education technology environments. We seek deep experience and contacts in the K-12 education industry, strong strategy & operating skills, and a proven track record developing, delivering and monetizing innovative education products.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Planning & Strategy

  • Works in partnership with the executive team to define overall education strategy and business model and align education goals closely with other organizational goals at Common Sense.
  • Holds in-depth understanding of Common Sense Education’s markets, customers, competitors, education policy and thought leaders.
  • Leads marketing, program, content and business development efforts designed to expand reach and impact across Common Sense Education offerings.
  • Provides leadership to Education Marketing group, including personal involvement in developing marketing plans, channel strategy, pricing, direct marketing and social media plans that are on budget and designed to maximize ROI.
  • Creates annual operating plans that support financial and mission goals of the organization.
  • Responsible for partnering with business development and development team to generate earned income and philanthropic funding required to sustain and grow the initiative. 


  • Provides operational management to Education group. Communicates overarching organizational goals and translates them into specific departmental goals. Delegates responsibilities and holds team members accountable, while celebrating individual and team successes.
  • Persuasive, collaborative senior leader who can mentor colleagues and develop future leaders within the organization.
  • On quarterly basis, evaluates the performance of each function (product management, operations, outreach, marketing, distribution and financial management) he/she is responsible for and adjusts accordingly, to ensure performance is on goal.
  • Along with executive team, this candidate will be responsible for defining and evangelizing the Education culture inside and outside of Common Sense. 

Product Management & Marketing

  • Oversees product management and marketing of curriculum and interactive education products (games, embedded assessment) delivered online.
  • Leads group to define and execute product roadmaps, as well as products’ operational success.
  • Manages organization’s resources within budget guidelines to produce world-class educational solutions on time and on budget.
  • Analyzes market and business requirements, and develops business cases, to produce top quality Digital Literacy and Citizenship products for students, teachers, parents and corporate alliances.
  • Works with corporate Common Sense marketing team (employees and consultants) to build brand, develop customer loyalty programs and launch marketing programs that move the mission and brand forward.
  • Works with business development to identify and establish content licensing, marketing and distribution partnerships with for-profit and non-profits in K-12 education market.
  • Works closely with Executive Leadership to create new markets and generate self-sustaining revenue for the organization.

Education and/or Experience:

  • BS or BA degree and a minimum of 10 years in a general management or senior executive capacity within the Education Market; MBA required. PhD in Education a plus.
  • Proven track record developing, marketing and delivering educational product solutions to the US K-12 market.
  • Digital technology and online product development experience; the ideal candidate will have experience successfully developing, pricing and marketing educational games, software, assessment, or professional development products to schools and/or value added resellers.
  • Strong leader and operator with a track record of building successful cross-disciplinary teams.
  • Ability to stay on top of many tasks at once, set clear deliverables, execute on-time and within budget, and inform others of results.
  • Cultural sensitivity, “not-for-profit friendly” experience/fit, and broad level of interpersonal skills and leadership.
  • Numerous contacts in the education market and deep knowledge of key individual and institutional players.
  • Experience in leading a fast growth organization with a focus on measurement, analytics, and continual improvement.
  • Success in fundraising, revenue generation, and delivering double bottom line impact for education products or programs.
  • Proven track record of success in growing and defending the business in a competitive environment.

  • Mission-oriented: Superb Education and business strategist to navigate this nascent, dynamic and complex market – the overall education strategist (requires vision and deep education expertise).
  • Vision and entrepreneurialism and product expertise required to build a platform that’s essential for teachers. Must be able to see the big picture, and help the organization identify and focus on the best product/market opportunities.
  • Lead business strategist - Ability to generate an earned income stream to create sustainability and enable growth & ability to evolve the overall Education platform and associated products to meet target market needs on time, on budget, etc.
  • Highly analytical approach to managing the initiative in order to maximize ROI across all spend.
  • Deep online/digital expertise to meet changing needs of the market both in terms of digital marketing as well as digital product development.
  • Ability to recruit, develop and retain the next generation of Common Sense Education leaders (and further develop existing stars).
  • Consciously creates, contributes to, and supports a workplace culture that is consistent with Common Sense’s organizational values and mission.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; A good listener, collaborator, and influencer. Ability to interface with people at all levels of the organization.
