Through our schools program, we provide educators with a curriculum that teaches the essential digital citizenship and literacy skills every student needs to succeed. More than 100,000 member schools across the country use our ratings and free curriculum and content. We also work with policymakers, industry leaders, legislators, and a grassroots community of concerned parents and teachers to improve the media and education landscape for kids, families, and schools.

We are looking for a passionate design intern who is excited to learn about the inner workings of a design team. As an intern, you will assist our design team in executing team project deliverables while garnering practical experience in a fast-paced national nonprofit environment. 

LOCATION: San Francisco, CA 

TYPE: Part-time, temporary

HOURS: ~20 hours per week 

REPORTS TO: Art director

YOU WILL LEARN HOW TO:

  • Thrive in a professional setting with a creative team of designers, writers, brand marketers, and other teams across the organization.
  • Build tangible and marketable skills.
  • Develop and produce design assets for use online and in print.
  • Hone your technical experience and skills working in ExactTarget.
  • Collaborate in a mission-driven organization. 

WHAT YOU'LL DO:

  • Learn about the Common Sense brand.
  • In tandem with the creative team, interface with other teams including education, editorial, product and engineering, marketing, events, business design, and fundraising.
  • Create visual solutions to communicate concepts, stories, and our brand to parent and educator audiences. 
  • Use Sketch, InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator to create online interfaces, stand-alone images, and text layouts.
  • Report to art director, work alongside other designers, and collaborate with project managers on deliverables and workflow.
  • Assist individual team members with other administrative duties.

WHAT WE WOULD LIKE TO SEE ON YOUR APPLICATION:

  • Enthusiasm to learn about our organization and our design department's work.
  • Demonstrated interest in education, advocacy, and social justice issues.
  • Past or current coursework in a related field.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

  • Ideal start date: June 15th.
  • Ideal end date August 20th.
  • Hours: ~1520 hours/week.
  • Interns need to be available to attend a minimum of six weekly educational Lunch & Learns (there will be seven total). Lunch & Learns will be every Wednesday from 12 p.m.1 p.m. (PST). On-site attendance is preferred.
  • We will work with your clinical or internship office for school credit if necessary.
  • This is a paid opportunity.
