We also work with policymakers, industry leaders, legislators, and a grassroots community of concerned parents and teachers to improve the media and education landscape for kids, families, and schools.

We are looking for a passionate privacy intern who would like to learn about, and support, the inner workings of our privacy function. As an intern, you will assist our privacy team in executing team project deliverables while garnering practical experience in a fast-paced national nonprofit environment. This internship requires a general interest in policy and the technical aspects of privacy. We encourage students with policy, education, law, and/or technical backgrounds to apply. 

LOCATION: San Francisco, CA 

TYPE: Part-time, temporary

HOURS: ~20 hours per week 

REPORTS TO: Senior counsel and director, Privacy Program


  • Work alongside a cutting-edge product, technical, and legislative team that is bringing greater transparency and accountability to the entire sphere of personal information. 
  • Build tangible and marketable skills.
  • Develop writing, research, analytical, and presentation skills.
  • Collaborate in a mission-driven organization. 


  • Work on the Privacy Evaluation Program (, a school district-led effort to improve understanding of the privacy implications of education technology (technology used to support teaching and learning). 
  • Read the privacy policies of education technology applications, draft blog posts to teachers on how to evaluate the privacy protections of software, and meet with educators, vendors, parents, or district staff to provide information on privacy and security best practices.
  • Develop written foundation backgrounders and individual donor bios that offer a concise

synthesis of their priorities with recommendations on where there is alignment with Common Sense.

  • Analyze and synthesize data from major donor communications, including developing and then presenting a summary of the data to staff.
  • Reconcile and clean up donor/foundation data in Salesforce. 
  • Analyze and develop a presentation on regional education impact data.
  • Assist individual team members with other administrative responsibilities. 


  • Enthusiasm to learn about our organization and our privacy department's work.
  • Demonstrated interest in education, advocacy, and social justice issues.
  • Past or current coursework in a related field.


  • Ideal start date: June 15th.
  • Ideal end date: August 20th.
  • Hours: ~1520 hours/week.
  • Interns need to be available to attend a minimum of six weekly educational Lunch & Learns (there will be seven total). Lunch & Learns will be every Wednesday from 12 p.m.1 p.m. (PST). On-site attendance is preferred.
  • We will work with your clinical or internship office for school credit if necessary.
  • This is a paid opportunity.
